PLASTIC BAGS, 2014/15

The series “Plastic Bags” shows photos of simple plastic bags, which I collected in the urban landscape in Berlin. The bags are staged in a classic studio manner in front of a white background. Instead of civilizational waste the bags lose their character and rather turn into unique artefacts, precious findings of contemporary culture.
Through continuous atmospheric and external conditioning the bags are crumpled and swatted, their hue faded, each bag contains its own iridescent qualities creating individual imprints. Having lost their purpose as functional objects the mass produced bags appear as individually crafted shapes. The philosophier Catherine Malabou describes this plasticity in the book “Draussen Dehors Outside” as “mortal animation of the being.”
